Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Haiti

Another significant donation to the team that I have forgotten to mention until now:

We had received word, prior to the team's departure, that there was a critical shortage of tetanus vaccine-- a great need in the midst of many dirty wounds. Although it was unclear whether the vaccine would be helpful so many days out from the original injuries, it seemed to prudent secure some vaccine for the team's use. The Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Immunization (Heather Staufford, Acting Director, and Kathy Luckenbill, Immunization Nurse Consultant), donated 300 doses of TdaP vaccine on very short notice. In addition, HMC's pharmacy ordered an additional 500 doses of Td that was delivered within 24 hours for the team to use. These vaccines were requested by Drs. Paul and Kim Barton who serve as medical missionaries in Ecuador-- and Paul was in Haiti as an anesthesiologist in the original wave of relief workers. Their home church in Dallas, the New St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, took a special offering to raise the $9000 to pay for the vaccines.

Those vaccines were hand-carried down by the team to Haiti, maintaining the required temperatures to keep the vaccines viable. And, on one of the first days at the LAC camp, there was a massive vaccination clinic using our vaccines. We are very grateful to these organizations for their donations to the work in Haiti.
